Product Overview

The PMP1000 is a parallel processing DSP board that features industry leading processing power and data throughput capabilities.  The processing power is provided by multiples of Texas Instrument’s highest performance TMS320C6414 DSPs and the high data throughput is facilitated by the internal mechanization of the PMP1000, which utilizes multiple high-speed buses combined with cross-point port switching to connect "anything to anything"; at full parallel bus bandwidth.  Due to the throughput and processing power of the PMP1000, many processes that were previously performed off-line can now be performed in REAL TIME.

The unique PMP1000 architecture incorporates a master DSP called the Program Execution Processor (PEP) and options of four or eight slave DSPs.  In the PMP1000 mechanization, all slave DSPs execute program threads managed by the PEP.  The slave DSPs are mounted four to a daughter card called a "Quad DSP Array" or QDA.  Each of these slave DSPs has 64 megabytes of external SDRAM (mapped into each of the DSPs) in addition to more than one megabyte of internal RAM.  Operating at a clock rate of 1 GHz, each DSP is capable of executing up to 8 instructions per clock cycle for a peak processing performance of 8 GIPS per DSP or 72 GIPS for the entire board.

There are three data interfaces on the PMP1000 DSP board that allow for communication to the outer world.  The primary interface from the PC perspective is the PCI-X host interface, which can transfer data at peak rates of up to 1 GB/s when the board is installed in a PCI-X slot with 64-bit data at 133 MHz.  The board can also be operated in lower performance PCI slots, including both 64 and 32 bits from 133 MHz to 33 MHz.

The second interface is the Signatec Auxiliary Bus (SAB), which allows for a high-speed connection to other Signatec boards and can sustain a transfer rate up 500 megabytes per second (1000 MB/s specification pending).  Signatec offers a range of products (in the areas of data acquisition, signal generation, and waveform recording) with SAB interfaces that can connect to the PMP1000.  This interface supports up to 8 boards.

The third and final external bus interface for the PMP1000 is a provision that allows for a high-speed external interface connection up to 1 GB/s to any bus or combination of busses.  These busses can be of any type, provided that the bus or combination of busses does not exceed the transfer bandwidth of the PMP1000 external interface connection (1 GB/s).  In addition to the PMP1000 being the highest performing DSP product in its price class, the ability to connect to any type of channel or multiple channels of data for exceptionally high continuous data throughput rates also makes the product the most flexible.  (Note: this feature will not be fully implemented until several months after the product's initial release.)

Not to be outdone by the performance aspect of the product, the PMP1000 software development system (called Integrator) and onboard real-time OS make parallel processor programming easier than ever before.  Signatec's Integrator software includes a development environment that seamlessly connects development tools from Signatec, Texas Instruments, and Microsoft Visual C into a user-friendly environment running under Windows 2000/XP.  Conversion of a user application (typically written in C) into a much more complex parallel processing program in the TI DSP machine language is as simple as clicking the "Build" button.  Signatec's development environment makes the PMP1000, not only easy to use but, quick to deliver a solution.

The ease in programming for this product is furthered by the inclusion of many PMP1000 source code examples that demonstrate what 90% of all users typically want to do, which is send data from an external interface to the DSPs for processing, process the data and send results (typically, though not exclusively) to the PC.  Other unique features of this software system include whole board profiling and whole board debugging tools.
